Repurpose a Packing Tape Roll into Boho Storage
Don’t throw that empty packing tape roll away until you’ve seen how easy it is to turn it into this gorgeous boho storage box. And if you don’t need more storage it’s the perfect size to use as a gift box too.
I love this project because it’s super easy to do and uses things we would normally throw away.
Plus, you can customize your repurposed packing roll any way you want to. I went for vibrant colors and added a small beaded rock as a knob. If soft, muted colors are more your style, you can use strips of drop cloth instead, or you can repurpose a pair of old denims.
And as luck would have it, the repurposed packing tape roll storage fits right in with this month IBC Rock and Roll challenge.
What’s the IBC all about
The IBC, or International Blogger’s Club, is a group of bloggers from all over the world who challenge each other to make something using a common theme. Last month’s challenge was toilet paper 😀 and we had so much fun making this adorable miniature storage crate complete with teeny, tiny toilet rolls. It’s the middle of Summer up North at the moment, so only us ladies from the Southern Hemisphere who are taking part in this month’s “Rock ‘n Roll” challenge.
Okay, before we get to all the good stuff, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram. And don’t forget to subscribe so you’ll never miss a post!
What you need
- Fabric scraps
- Large bead (optional)
- Empty packing tape roll
- Glue gun
- Thick cardboard
- Small rock
Well, technically it’s not a rock but a pebble. But it must have been a rock once upon a time right ?
How to repurpose a packing tape roll into gorgeous boho storage
Start by tracing the outer edge of the packing tape roll on sturdy cardboard and cut out. You’ll need two circles for this repurposed storage idea.
Tear or cut your fabric into long strips about a 1” wide. I had a whole bunch of beautifully frayed silk fabric leftover from when we made our “Peace Dreamcatcher” so I used that. Place one of the strips on the roll and wind the strip up and over the roll.
My gypsy soul loves crazy, bright colors so I used different colors on my roll. If you prefer something a little calmer, you can stick with the same color. Continue winding the fabric around the packing tape roll until it’s completely covered. Add a little glue to the end piece and tuck it neatly behind the wound strips.
Right, that’s the body of the boho storage done. To make the lid, make a hole in one of the circles you cut earlier. The size of the hole will depend on the thickness of the fabric you use. Wind the fabric strips through the center hole and around the circle, just like you would if you were making pompoms in the old-fashioned way.
Cover the entire lid and finish off by adding a drop of glue to the end piece and tucking it underneath the wrapped pieces. And finally, make a small little knob for the boho storage using a pebble and a few beads.
Glue the pebble, erhhmm I mean small rock on the lid to hide the hole. You can also glue on a large bead or bauble.
For the bottom, simply paint the other circle in a coordinating color and glue it on.
And that’s it. The rock and duct tape roll storage box is all done.
Who would have thought that an empty roll of packing tape could look so gorgeous 😀
And it fits right in with our colorful and slightly wacky decor style.
I used the repourposed boho storage for my bead necklaces.
And they make great gift boxes too.

We’re moving house and I have so many empty rolls of tape that have been chucked in the bin. I don’t think they’ve been to collected yet so I need to find a small box to keep them in so they move with us. My husband is going think I’m weird ???
LOL Pam, if it’s any consolation, I don’t think you’re weird at all 😀 Go save those rolls.
I love it, a very creative use of what would be rubbish.
Thanks so much Claire. It’s definitely a fun and easy repurpose of throw away stuff.
So clever, bright and fun! Great jop!
Thanks so much Marty 😀
Cute idea, Mix!!! Seems like we have a packing tape roll come available about every 6 months or so. Definitely pinned. ? I love your gourd head, too!! He reminds me of the coconut animals we would see all over Oahu (at the tourist shops and on base) as kids. My mom and dad collected unusual face masks from Africa and the Philippines, too. We were very eclectic! Oh, and really cool tree sculptures (wish my parents hadn't got rid of those before their last move… ).
Happy crafting,
Barb 🙂
Those tree sculptures sound amazing Barb. We’re very lucky here in South Africa. You find the most amazing artwork sold on the side of the round by talented people from all over Africa. The coconut guy is one of my favorites/ I just love his happy face. It looks like he doesn’t have a care in the world.
Girl, I bet you have the prettiest packing tape storage in all of the lands! Love the boho vibe and I could see this used for funky bangles and the like too. Would make a great gift too!
When I finished wrapping the packing tape roll I came real close to stopping and just using it as a bangle. Those colors would go so well with some of the stuff I have in my closet 😀
I just love the textures and bright colors! Awesome creativity, too. Thanks for the idea.
You’re welcome, Meegan. I love bright, happy colors
What a wonderful reuse of a common item that would normally end up in the recycling bin. Well done Michelle!!
Thanks so much, Mary. The way we go through packing tape I have many more rolls to play with 😀
I love how this fits with the theme and how vibrant and useful it is!
And they’re so easy to make too 😉
Ok, you had me going for a while. I was convinced I got the wrong end of the stick when I saw your project. You really did go outside the box on this one. It would never have entered my head to come up with a project like yours. It is brilliant, well done. P.S. I don’t have a gypsy soul but I LOVE the fabrics and colours you used.
🙂 Sorry Anita, I thought I’d take this challenge literally and try using a rock and a roll to make something.
