When you don’t have a lot of space, you have to be super creative about how you use every inch of valuable real estate. Our little round house is small, really small so we had to start getting crafty with our storage.
Like this large, hammered metal urn.
We added a fake topiary on top to keep out the dust and to bring some greenery indoors. But don’t be fooled, she’s more than just a pretty accessory. We also use her to store our picnic blanket and other crucial beach goodies.
The metal fish on the other hand is just for decoration. Isn’t she beautiful? I wish I could remember the artist’s name who made it. I love her simple lines and the contrast between metal and wood. She’s chunky and solid yet she still conveys a sense of grace and elegance.
In the main bedroom we use a large basket on top of our cupboard to store all our bed linen and some spare pillows.
Two more baskets in the open plan lounge, that doubles up as a second bedroom and kitchenette, serve the same purpose.
We also re-purposed this beautiful old suitcase into a table that also acts as storage for all our board games. Adding wheels makes it easier to move out of the way when the lounge becomes a bedroom.
Even an old ammo box can be turned into a handy little cupboard for a kitchenette. Simply screw it on the wall.
The ammo box lids make stunning rustic shelves. We simply used L-shaped brackets to hang them up. In the bathroom downstairs we’ve hung a bookshelf on the wall.
It gives us lots of extra space for all those little luxuries that make a bathroom a relaxing haven.
Don’t you just love that sign, lol!! It’s so me. We also added a ladder in an odd corner between the toilet and shower for some towels.
See that cute little beach handbag? It’s a pocket we cut from a pair of shorts that were falling apart. It’s got sunscreen and all the must-haves to protect ourselves from the harsh African sun. The kids already know when mom says “grab the pocket and let’s go” we’re on our way to the beach. She hangs from our easy to make branch towel rack.
To free up counter space in our kitchen downstairs we spray painted some hanging buckets we found at a garden center and use them to store all our washing up paraphernalia (look mom I used a BIG word 8-) )
We also re-purposed a wooden fishing tackle box and an office cupboard to make a kitchen island. Look at all that extra storage space. Whoop, whoop :-)
And let’s not forget about this beauty. Another thrift store find that we gave a farmhouse look by adding chicken wire doors and a new coat or three of paint ;-) We did something similar with this CD storage rack and I love how it turned out.
And then there’s that space under the stairs in the kitchen. We made this gorgeous door out of old pallets to hide all the clutter.
We use a cupboard we built under our curved stairs to store all those bits and pieces that are an eyesore, like our grungy mop and feather duster. Hubby cut up some 50mm conduit and screwed them into the wall. They’re perfect for storing those odd bits that usually get shoved in some corner.
He’s such a clever man. We attached these funky baskets that we got on Amazon to the inside of the door. They were soooo easy to install and the plastic coating means it won’t rust down at the coast. Bonus!!! I’m pretty sure if I look hard enough I can find a few more spots for extra storage, and if you’ve got any tips please share, I’d love to hear from you.
And if you like these creative storage ideas, don’t forget to pin them for later.

“I don’t skinny dip, I chunky dunk”, had me laugh out loud! Love the unique and clever storage ideas, Michelle. The fishing tackle kitchen island is AMAZING and so is your clever beach storage idea.

Thanks Keri :-)
That suitcase is gorgeous and I really like the idea of using a big planter to store things. Well done!
Thank you :-) That suitcase is HUGE and we were very lucky to find it.
These are really great ideas. I love the kitchen island you created. And your home is full of beautiful one of a kind eclectic pieces (the pocket) which really reflect your personality. After all that is what a home should be not a cookie cutter of someone else’s.
Lol, that’s probably why I enjoy all the things you’ve done Mary. P.S. I love what you did with the milk crates :-)
OH MY Goodness! You are so resourceful and CRAFTY!
