Adorable DIY Dog Leash Holder and Free Printable
Some of my fondest memories growing up were the “bum creatures” my Mom used to draw for us. She would sketch elephants, and pigs, and mice, and cats, and dogs. And they all had one thing in common. Big round bums 😀 My sister and I spent hours coloring them in and begging her to draw more. I really miss those “bum creatures” and I decided to draw my own version and make this adorable Scotty dog leash holder.
Scottish Terriers are my Mom’s favorite type of fur baby. They’re so comical with their boxy bodies, short legs, crazy beards, and quirky eyebrows. So it seemed fitting to use a Scotty for the dog leash holder since it’s my Mom’s “bum creature” drawings that inspired me in the first place 😀
It’s a quick and easy DIY and would make a lovely gift for someone who loves Scotties or any other kind of fur baby. If you’d like to make something similar, I’ve included the Scotty printable in the tutorial (If you’re a BIG fat corporate, please draw your own version. For everyone else, use and abuse and I hope you make lots of money 😉 ).

What you need
- A piece of wood (20 cm x 18 cm or7 7/8″ x 7″ )
- Single hook
- Craft paint
- Paintbrushes
- Permanent marker
- Clear sealer
- Screwdriver
- Sawtooth hanger
- Free Scotty Printable or any other drawing of a fur baby’s bum 😉
How to Make the Scotty Dog Leash Holder
Start by prepping your piece of wood. It needs to be smooth enough to use as a canvas to paint the Scotty on. Since we cut our own, I gave it a quick sanding with 100 grit sandpaper followed by a 120 grit.
Stain or paint the block. I used some of our Rusty Nail Muti. It’s a DIY water-based stain that never fails us, and it’s so easy to make at home.
And I love how quickly it transforms “new wood” to “old wood” in a matter of minutes.
Once the paint or stain dries, transfer the Scotty image onto your prepared block of wood.
Grab those craft paints and paint her black. Okay, not quite black in my case 😉 I wanted the little Scotty to be a Charcoal Grey so I mixed up some black and white craft paint until I had the right color. You can paint the Scotty white if you’d like to make a Westie instead 😉 Remember to save some of the colors to paint the hook.
Paint the body and head of the Scotty.
And then paint in the eyes. When the paint dries outline the Scotty image with a Sharpie or permanent marker.
Now, all that’s left to do to turn the Scotty image into a dog leash holder is add a hook erhhmmm, I mean tail 😉
Place the hook kinda in the middle of her bum and screw it in. Why does that sound so wrong??? Seal the Scottie dog leash holder with a clear sealer or varnish to protect her from chipping and add a sawtooth hook on the back.
Pro Tip: Use a pair of pliers to protect your fingers when you hammer the little screws in.
And your Scotty dog leash holder is done.
Hang and enjoy 🙂
Don’t you just love it? The little Scotty dog leash holder didn’t even take 30 minutes to make and they’re a big hit at craft shows too.
If you like the idea of making a Scotty dog leash holder, don’t forget to pin it for later.
BTW, if your fur baby is not into long walks and prefers sleeping all day, then maybe it’s time to try doing a little dog yoga, aka doga 😉 with them. It’s so important if we want them to stick around for a long time. This post is dedicated to our beautiful old girl Kayla, who sadly left us on the 9th of February to cross over the rainbow bridge. I miss you so very much my KP child.
How did I miss this! Our firstborn was a Westie (the white version) of this dog breed. Oh, how I would have loved something like this for her dog leash. Such an adorable idea and such a great gift idea for the dog lovers in our lives. Pinned
Aren’t they just the cutest fur babies. I think my Mom always wanted a Westie too, but they were so expensive and for some reason really difficult to find here in South Africa
Michelle, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your sweet Kayla. Those eyes of hers will forever be remembered. And what a wonderful way to keep her in your memory with this dog leash holder.
Thank you, Mary. I still miss seeing her lying next to me while I work. They’re forever in our hearts right?
I love Scotties too. We have 3 at the moment, including a Brindel called Jock. He’s the youngest and so naughty but loves his walks, always out front leading the pack.
LOL Kathleen. That does sound like a typical Jock move. One of our Scotties growing up was also called Jock and he had such an attitude 😀
Oh my Michelle this is beyond adorable. I am hoping to find time to do a pet organizer for leashes for my big boy. I love this idea so much. I guess your Mom is where you got your talent and love of art? Pinning to my Pet DIY board.
My Mom sure was and still is, a major influence in my life. She’s incredibly creative and used to make the most amazing stained glass creations before she had her stroke.
Oh, Michelle! I just saw the last photograph of your sweet pup Kayla… I am so sorry. It about killed me when our Golden Skeeter died at age 14 1/2 and Yoda is now right around 15, old for a Peke. He still goes for 1/2 mile walks but summer was really tough on him last year. My heart goes out to you and your family; prayers for healing and only happy memories… ? This sweet Scotty leash hanger is adorable! Maybe you can hang Kayla’s collar and tags there… We have Skeeter’s in the garage to see when we walk inside every time. ?
Big hugs,
Barb ?
Thank you so much for your beautiful words Barb. It’s heartbreaking when we lose them, they have such beautiful souls. I’m sorry to hear about your Skeeter that crossed over. I really love your idea of hanging Kayla’s collar on something like this. I think I’ll draw another little bum creature with her coloring and build 😀
Oh Michelle your little Scotty dog is adorable! It makes the perfect leash holder. I may be needing my own before long. I have told myself that I’m not getting another dog until I retire in a few years. But I have been wanting one now! So I have been watching the dog shelters for one. So we will see if I can hold off till I retire. LOL. Thanks for sharing your cute printable!
I would never be able to wait to get a fur baby. They’re such a huge part of our lives. But I understand where you’re coming from Linda. You work such long hours and it’s not always easy to give them the love and attention they need. But maybe, just maybe there will be that one that creeps into your heart and you can give each other all the love and cuddles you both deserve.
What a fun idea and so cute Michelle. P.S. I’m sorry for your loss. ?
😀 Thank you
This is so cute.
Thank you 😀
Michelle, this is adorable! I love it.
Thank you so much Deana 😀
