With Valentine’s day around the corner, I thought I’d make something small for all the men in my life; my Dad, hubby aka soul mate, my son ……….. In their own very special way they all light up my life. I don’t know about you, but it’s not always easy finding the right valentine’s gift for guys. Socks with hearts on are notoriously difficult to find and, to be honest, it’s a bit weird disconcerting sitting next to someone and seeing little hearts peek out from under their trousers. But that’s just me :D So while I was out shopping for who knows what, I found some adorable mini mason jars. And that got me thinking, why not add some matches, and a label and turn them into matchstick holders?

Aren’t they cute? And they’re super easy to make too.

What you need
- Small mason jars
- Large matchbox
- Paint
- Drill
How to make the mason jar matchstick holders
Remove the mason jar lids and drill a small hole in the center of the lid. The hole needs to be just big enough to fit a match. The holes make it easy to dispense the matches, just turn the jar upside down and shake.

Paint the lids in a color of your choice. I used a gorgeous copper color for mine.

Cut up a matchbox and stick the ignition strips on the sides of the mason jar using the E6000 glue. Trust me on this one. I tried using super glue and a glue gun but they didn’t work.
Add a label and your mason jar matchstick holders are all done. A quick and easy gift for the man men in your life ;-)

These little mason jar matchstick holders will keep your matches dry and are the perfect manly accessory for a picnic or a braai. Talking about accessories, have you seen our succulent mason jar canisters? You’ll love how they turned out too.

Very cute idea and the perfect gift idea for Father’s Day coming soon. We could use one of these for our backyard firepit. I’ll make hubby’s without the hole on the top so the jar is water-tight and moisture-free so it can be kept outdoors near the firepit. Thanks for the inspiration!
You’re welcome, Marie. I’m sure your hubby’s going to love having his own stash of matches handy
This is such a cute idea, my hubby would love this to keep in the garage for lighting up the fire pit. Thanks for the idea!!
Why does it need a hole in the lid?
Good question :-) We added the hole so the guys can just shake the jar upside down and a match falls out. Kinda like a tooth pick dispenser.
I love this! I have a question…kinda dumb, but here goes: Does it really work? The matches come through the hole?
Thanks!
Hey Christy, it’s not a dumb question at all and yes it really does work. My hubby has been using his for about 3 years now and we’ve replaced the little strike strips on the sides quite a few times. The hole in the lid isn’t strictly necessary, but it does make it easier to dispense the matches. Just flip and shake ?
