Custom Coasters with a Twist
As I get older I’ve started realizing that the most valuable gift we can give someone is our time. Think about it, if you try hard enough you can get more of almost anything; we can buy more things, find more friends, create more stuff or make more money. The only thing we can never get more of is time. It trickles through our fingers like fine sand and when we look again it’s all gone. For this Father’s day, I wanted to give my Dad something special that would show him how much I love him and how much he means to me.
The thing with my Dad is – he has everything, seriously!! He collects vintage cars as a hobby, he has a gorgeous wife and a very successful company. His time is a precious commodity, he doesn’t have a lot to give because he’s really busy running the company, entertaining people, and trying to make everyone around him happy, in his own quiet, dignified way. I spent a lot of time thinking about what I could give him. He loves cake, but I can’t bake. He loves old cars, but I struggle to change a tire (Lefty Loosey and Righty Tighty) and I wouldn’t know the difference between a Triumph Spitfire and a TR2 (they both have wheels don’t they?) The only thing I can do is make stuff. So I made him something, these “made with love and lots of thoughts” custom coasters with a twist.

How to Make Custom Coasters With a Twist
Making them didn’t take a lot of time but thinking about what message to put on the coasters did. And I didn’t just want to give him coasters. I really wanted to see him smile and one thing I know about my Dad is that he loves surprises, something different and unexpected. I think it’s because he studied Engineering…….he’s an inquisitive problem solver with a heart of gold. He’s one of those quiet resourceful types, you know 🙂 So here’s the twist that made him smile, these coasters also open bottles.
The coasters were made from old pallets that we cut into 10 cm x 10 cm squares.
To make the coaster you need a pallet that’s at least 2 cm thick, a 32 spade bit, a 20 spade bit, some 18 mm washers and screws.
We used the 32 spade bit drill a hole in the bottom of the 10 x 10 pallet square that’s deep and wide enough to fit a beer bottle top comfortably (about 15 mm).
I didn’t want the coasters to wobble. Beer is precious – don’t waste 😉 so we counter sunk the washers using the 20 spade bit to make a small hole on the side of the bigger 32 mm hole. We found that the edge of the washer needs to overlap the hole for the beer top by about 5 mm. Anything less than that and there wasn’t enough leverage to open the bottle. Anything more than 5 mm meant that the beer bottle top wouldn’t fit in the hole. (P.S. for all my American friends, you can use this online app to convert cm/mm to inches).
We used our Dremel to sand away any rough edges and then screwed in the washer.
Customizing the coasters
Now for the fun bit, customizing the coasters with images and quotes. The Graphics Fairy is my go-to place to get inspiration and stunning images that I could play around with. I also found this site to download some awesome background textures (all free).
I used Mod Podge to glue the custom-made images to the front of the coasters and then added three coats of heat-resistant polyurethane to seal and protect. Not everyone in our family drinks ice-cold alcoholic beverages 😎 Wait for the sealer to dry before using.
And when you need a bottle opener just flip the coasters over and twist 😉
This is for you my Dad, you are my hero and I will love you till the end of time and then a little bit more. Happy Father’s Day.
I’d love to know what you think of the custom coasters with a twist. Is it something you would make for your Dad or even the hubby?

The hubby got the test run 😀

Thank you so much Jan for the lovely comment and the Father’s Day party. SO many people shared so many awesome ideas for Father’s Day. I had loads of fun
I love them! Such a great decor item.
Thank you so much Kellie, I’m glad you like them
I’m loving these and so clever to put a bottle opener at the bottom. What did your dad think?
My dad’s one of those quiet types, but I did see him smile when he saw the bottle opener at the bottom. Not a toothy smile, he doesn’t do that, a small little twinkle smile, so I think he likes them 🙂
I love this Michelle. And it’s even more special because it has the bottle opener. Rustic goodness all the way!
Thank you Mary <3
These are awesome! Dad’s are sometimes hard to buy for so this is a really thoughtful gift. I love how you added the bottle opener in the back – super creative! Hope you’re having a great day, CoCo
Thank you, and you’re right Dads are never easy when it comes to gifts that mean something. You want to show them how much you love them but socks and ties just don’t do it for me. Hope you’re having a beautiful day too <3
Thank you for the gorgeous graphics as always. What would we do without you 🙂
These are amazing! I love the graphics you chose for the coasters, and the added bottle opener is so cool. I have never seen a coaster with a bottle opener. These are special and one of a kind. I agree there is no better gift then time, I’m sure your dad will love these.
Thank you Linda 🙂 What would I do without the Graphics Fairy, love her stuff.
Wow this is one of the most clever things I have seen. I bet your Dad will love these more then anything else. Plus it looks like you have a little bit of the engineering gene in you.
Lol, thanks Debra 😀
These coasters are so special and so beautiful Michelle! Your dad will be amazed and so happy! There’s no better gift! You’re right, it’s hard to find something that isn’t “time” for someone who has everything, but these are so so clever with the bottle opener at the bottom! I’ve never seen this before!
Thank you Katrin, I would love to bottle up some time with my Dad so I can save it for those days when I just need to be Daddy’s little girl again. He’s a very special person <3
That’s so nice, I know what you mean. I wish my dad was still here, I miss those days!
Oh I’m so sorry to hear that Katrin, sending you lots of hugs and love.
Michelle, your coasters are amazing!! They look so awesome with the graphics on them and how creative to make them dual purposed. This is a great gift idea! Your dad sounds like an amazing guy. I’m sure he’ll love your gift. Would you believe I’ve been making wooden coasters too? Great minds think alike, hey? 😉
Oh I can’t wait to see your coasters Keri 😀 All your stuff is beautiful.
