Make Your Own Heavenly Angel Wings Wall Decor

OMW, the year is almost half way done. How did that happen? This month just flew past. Talking about flying, I’ve been seeing these gorgeous angel wings everywhere lately and I really wanted a pair for our bedroom. Pottery Barn had some over-sized ones that are absolutely gorgeous. But the prize tag was a little steep for our budget. A whopping $675 is crazy. That’s more than we pay on our bond every month. Plus, even if I could afford them, Pottery Barn doesn’t ship to South Africa . Bah! Humbug! Or as we say in Afrikaans; “Dis somer kak daai” So if I can’t buy me some angel wings then I’ll just have to make my own 😉

These beautiful angel wings will look heavenly hanging anywhere in your home and they’re super easy to make too. #DIYHomeDecor

Pretty cool right?!! And they’re budget friendly and super easy to make too. All you need is a pair of those el cheapo wings from a toy store. Any color will do. We had these black ones in our “dress up” storage bin. I’m guessing one of the kids wanted to be a dark angel at some stage 😀

Cut any elastic bits off ….

And spray the wings. Because our angel wings were black, I gave them a coat of grey followed by a coat of white to make them look like they’ve been cast in stone. A dark brown with hints of copper and gold would look awesome too. Mmmmm, maybe I need to make another one to keep the sexy angel in our metallic bathroom company 🙂

The spray paint serves two purposes – not only does it change the color but the paint protects the wings and makes the feathers quite stiff and hard. That way they’ll be easier to dust once they’re up 🙂

Framing to The Angel Wings

For the frame I wanted to create a layered look, with lots of texture and visual interest. The easiest way to do that is to make a box frame.  The one we made for the angel wings consists of a basic frame made from pallets. We stapled wire mesh to the back before adding the box portion.

For the last layer, or backing, we used a piece of plywood that’s been grungy-fied with a few napkins, gauze and home made gesso.

Before putting the whole frame together the angel wings were sewn onto the wire mesh using fishing line.

A clay heart, encased it in some chicken wire adds a little something special to the angel wings and it hides that fishing line too. The clay heart was attached using bits of wire.

I love the way the real feathers look against the grungy background.

So stunning! What size is the clay heart and where did you find it?
    • Posted: December 11, 2019 04:47

Hello Sue, the clay heart was homemade using airdry clay. Once it had dried we dry brushed a little white paint on and then wrapped it in chicken wire. We hung the angel wings in the bedroom at our holiday home so I can't give you the exact measurements until we go down again, but if I remember correctly the heart just fits in the palm of my hand, so it's about 10 cm long (about 4")

I am in the process of making my wings now.we got our wings at joannes after Halloween and hobby lobby had frames with wire already on .will post pictures when done
    • Posted: May 24, 2019 15:59

That is sooooooooooooo awesome 💞 I can't wait to see how yours turn out
    • Posted: December 10, 2019 22:04

Wondering how it came out using the frame with wire already attached? Also did you find the clay heart?
      • Posted: December 11, 2019 04:50

If you have a frame with wire already attached that would be perfect for displaying the angel wings. You can also buy a sturdy frame (or make one 😉 ) and staple the wire onto the back of the frame. The angel wings hardly weigh a thing, so they shouldn't warp the wire or pull it off of the frame.

    Buffy Harris

Wow, They are amazing, I love crafting, but I am not a crafter. I could only wish I were. But I’m going to give this a try. Maybe because it’s Angel wings I’ll be better than I think. Maybe I’ll receive some guidance. Where would I be able to get the feathers for this? I can’t wait to try this. They are so AMAZING!!!!!
    • Posted: April 29, 2019 04:55

Hey there Buffy, so happy you like the wings. For these angel wings we used those cheap costume wings you always find around Halloween in craft shops. It's the ones the kids wear so they're inexpensive and you can get them in all kinds of colors too. Hope you have lots of fun and may this be the first of many more craft projects

This looks like it would be incredibly fiddly to make - so I was surprised to read that it wasn't actually that complicated! The end result is beautiful x
    • Posted: July 25, 2018 13:47

Thank you Becca. I'm not a big fan of fiddly, I usually mess things up when it becomes to complicated 🙂

    Linda at Mixed Kreations

These are stunning! I love how you added the different layers of paint, and how you grungyfied the back. You did a beautiful job, and I bet they look so much prettier then those ridiculously over priced ones.

You saved a lot of money Michelle! This is what I am doing also when I find something so expensive. I hack it :) This is such an interesting deco item... I have not seen something like this before.
    • Posted: July 9, 2018 13:10

And your hacks are always so beautiful too Christina 😍
  • Posted: July 7, 2018 15:49

Once again you prove that with a little creativity you can create something beautiful on your own. $675??? good grief. I laughed when I read they came from a dress up closet. You always find a purpose for everything don't you. Well done project Michelle, I love it.
    • Posted: July 8, 2018 11:46

😊 Aaww thank you Leanna. I almost fell over when I saw that price, but it's really gorgeous.

Michelle, these are awesome!!! Last Christmas I took apart a small Christmas dove decoration and made angel wings for my Maiden {the one we have inside that I decorate with a lot}, and they are probably my favorite project so far! Love love love yours and have already pinned them twice... <3 I can see these for Christmas with tinsel garland... maybe some candles below twinkling away... Might have to add a little glitter?!! ;) Happy decorating! My favorite project of the week, Hugs, Barb :)

What a fun craft!! It would look great set up on a wrap around porch, in between some rocking chairs! Looks fairly easy to execute too!
    • Posted: June 29, 2018 07:34

That would look so awesome Ayana, I've always wanted a wrap around porch
  • Posted: June 28, 2018 04:01

I like the way you "grungified" the frame Michelle! In fact, I'd like to know how you did it with napkins and gesso...sounds like an interesting process. Love the gray look on the wings too...gives it an ethereal, aged appearance. Another "Michelle Masterpiece"!
    • Posted: June 28, 2018 06:22

Thank you Florence 🙂 I'll see if I can put together a tutorial on how to grungify something
  • Posted: June 27, 2018 20:16

Hello Michelle! This project is absolutely beautiful! I would like a couple of wings for our bedroom too! We'll be giving a makeover to our bedroom when we come back from vacation in July and I am in the phase of "hunting for cool ideas!"

Thanks so much Sarah. We just love repurposing things. There's so many options and most of the time is works out cheaper than buying something
  • Posted: June 27, 2018 14:39

SO lovely! It should be illegal to sell angel wings for 675 bucks. Come on! Yours look gorgeous Michelle, what a fun decor project!!
    • Posted: June 27, 2018 16:31

I sooo agree with you Katrin. That's just nuts and they're all sold out too apparently. Go figure

I really love this! It’s beautiful, Michelle. These are way better then some overpriced crap. Confession: I’ve never been to a Pottery Barn, even though there are two in my area. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    • Posted: June 27, 2018 05:37

Oh you lucky thing Sam, but I would probably be too scared to go inside. Not sure my frugal heart would make it 🙂
  • Posted: June 27, 2018 01:30

Michelle that is such a beautiful upcycle of those old toy wings. Paint certainly went a long way here and turned them into high-end pieces like the ones we see at the pricey stores. You keep working your magic girl. I know there is an angel looking over your shoulder and sending inspiration your way.
    • Posted: June 27, 2018 05:40

😍 Aww Mary, thank you for that and I'm convinced there is an angel there somewhere looking over all of our shoulders
