A beautiful lampshade can add so much ambiance to a room, but it’s not always easy finding something that just right for your space. Here’s a quick and easy way to update any lampshade and turn it into something a little more special.

All you need to turn an old lampshade into something special

All you need

All you need is some dress trimmings from the local haberdashery, an old lampshade and a glue gun. Pick the trimmings that match the look you want to go for. This lampshade stood in our bedroom for years so I chose a soft, romantic little trim made from seed beads and shells, but any kind of trimming will work. I’ve seen some stunning ones made from feather, coins and even pompoms 🙂

Use a glue gun to glue the beads

Heat up the glue gun and then slowly glue around the bottom edge of the lampshade and stick the dress trimming down as you move around. I did little bits at a time while the glue was still hottish and sticky. Hot glue scares me a little, I’ve been burnt a few times so I tend to err on the side of caution.

Reattach the light

Continue gluing until you’ve gone all the way around and then cut the trimming, fold over and glue the end bitty down. You can use lots of layers of trimmings, one on top of the other until you’re happy with the look and then reattach the lampshade to the lamp base.

So romantic

I drape all my fake pearls over the lampshade coz I’ve run out of fake jewelry storage. But it adds to the look 😎 Well that’s my theory anyway.
