Make an AstroTurf Doormat to Keep the Dirt Out
We’ve been looking for some doormats to use in our holiday cottage but they were all kinda boring. They didn’t have that boho vibe we’re going for and the rubber one we’d bought before didn’t really do a good job of keeping the beach sand out. The other problem was the width of the double patio door. We could find small doormats but we needed something a little wider on the patio. Long story short, we decided to make our own AstroTurf doormat to keep the dirt out 😀
The fake grass or AstroTurf has a thick, non-slip backing that helps keep the mat in place and the grassy texture is perfect for trapping beach sand. I’m thinking it should also be pretty weather-resistant too. Hey, it’s fake grass 😉 I can also cut the AstroTurf to any size. So we made this small one for our front door and I plan on making one that’s a little wider for the double patio doors upstairs.
What you Need
Making the AstroTurf doormat was pretty easy and didn’t cost a lot. All you need is:
- a strip of astroturf
- a pair of scissors
- some twine
- sharp skewer
- tapestry needle
You can buy fake grass by the meter at most large fabric shops and AstroTurf suppliers normally have off-cuts that they’ll sell to the public too.
How To Make A AstroTurf Doormat
To make the doormat, cut the AstroTurf to fit the width of the doorway and poke holes at regular intervals all around the outside edge with a skewer or sharp stick.
Cut the twine into 16 cm (6″) strips and thread the strips into each hole in the AstroTurf.
I put three strips into each hole, but you can add as many as you want to.
Knot the strips together to form a fringe.
Repeat, again, and again 😀 It’s a bit boring and tedious, so you probably want to grab a glass of wine or a beer while you do it.
The smaller doormat took about an hour and a half to make, including getting the beers from the fridge once or twice, so that’s not too bad and Lulu seems to like the finished product.
Now I don’t need to haul out the vacuum cleaner every time we come back from the beach. Yay!!
I think I’ll buy myself a crochet needle and one of those punch things for the longer doormat else I might end up drinking way too much beer 😀
If you like the AstroTurf doormat idea don’t forget to pin for later.
Have you ever made your own doormat? How did you do it?

Your imagination and your creativity about diy projects makes me always to open my mouth and not to believe what I see!!! Michelle you are so creative person and perhaps you must think about to make a book with all these projects!!!
Awwww Christina, you made my day. That’s such a beautiful thing to say, thank you very much <3
You are so creative…another LOVE!!!
Thank you 😀
That’s a cute doormat Michelle, and certainly beats anything you buy from the store! A few beers/or wine would have me under the table in short order though!
LOL, the older I get the quicker the beers hit me too, but I’m really glad you liked the little doormat Florence I appreciate that
LOVE this! I need to redo our doormats and this is a great alternative to the straw or rubber ones. Visiting from Sweet Inspiration party.
Hey there Victoria, thank you so much. I love the way the faux grass adds a little greenery to the doorway
I like the edge. I think Lulu does too. Did she take it over as her outdoor bed? It is a really good idea to keep the inside clean and have a stylish entry.
LOL, yes it’s Lulu’s favorite little snuggle spot
Another amazing idea! The jute twine takes it to a whole other level. Pinned
Thank you Marie 😉
Michelle I think the addition of the twine was very pretty and very clever! And of course you know just how much I love twine. Now you are giving me ideas!
LOL Mary, we all love our twine 😀
What a brilliant idea! I have sliding doors that lead out to our backyard that also need an extra wide mat. And I love how well the astro turf and twine fringe work together 🙂
Thanks Jelica, and it feels so lovely under your feet
You are so creative, this idea is brilliant and looks so cool Michelle! And with Lulu on it even better, lol! It has a beachy vibe and I love it!
Thank you Katrin, our Lulu Belle is such a sweet thing. Love her to bits.
coincidentally my mom did the same last week. xD the carpet look more impressive and my dog love sleeping on it.
this idea is easy but very lovely.
Wow, that’s so cool. Great moms think alike 😉
How cute! It looks almost soft and mossy in the photos. I love the added edging. Gives a really nice finish to this DIY doormat.
Thanks Brianna. I’m loving all the different types of fake grass you can buy now 😀
What a creative idea!! With 4 kids and a fluffy dog, I’m always looking for ways to keep the dirt out!! This idea is easy too!
Lol, right hey. I don’t know who’s worse the furr babies or the kids when it comes to sandy foot prints 😀
This is cute and functional – I love it!
Thank you Sarah 😀
Michelle, your doormat looks awesome!! What a great idea!! Lulu seems to like it too. Yay for not having to vacuum the beach out of your house. I crocheted a jute rug once but it turned out better in my mind than in real life, lol.
Hey my favorite stencil lady 😉 I’m sure your Jute rug was real pretty Keri. All your stuff is awesome.
