I’ve been wanting to make some candle holders from a copper pipe we had leftover, but the thought of having to weld the pipes put me off. Welding is not something we do very well. It always ends up looking like bird poop 🙁 Fortunately, we have a really friendly hardware store just down the road from us. So off to Chamberlains I went. All I needed to do was look dazed and confused in the plumbing aisle and voila, one of their super helpful staff members came to my rescue.

After explaining what I wanted to do, he grabbed a few things off the shelf, told me in simple layman’s terms how to use them. I was finally ready to go make those candle holders.

  • Pipe cutter
  • Pallet wood offcuts
  • Screws
  • Paint and gilders paste to make it pretty

How to make copper pipe candle holders

This is a really quick and easy craft idea. All you need to do is attach all the bits in the right order. Well, kinda. Unless all the bits are made from different types of metal 😀 The only flange brackets we could find were silver and that was soooo not the look I was going for. I had some AMERICAN ACCENTS® Designer Metallic Spray leftover from another project we did, so I changed those silver flanges into aged brass flanges.

Spray Paint the flanges

While I was spray painting hubby cut some leftover pallet wood into two 35 cm x 11 cm pieces. After sanding they were given a whitewash with Provencal Furniture paint.  This beautiful water-based paint is environmentally friendly and contains little or no V.O.C  or Volatile Organic Compounds. Using some gilders paste we added some highlights. Baroque Art Gilders Paste can be applied as-is to clean, oil-free surface with a cloth and it dries to the touch in 10-15 minutes.

Now we’re finally ready to put all those bits together in the right order 😉

Putting the plumbing bits together

Assembly

From left to right the flange, coupler slip, copper pipe cut to a 70 mm length and the compression elbow. Insert the copper coupler into the flange and the copper pipe into the coupler slip.

Insert the copper coupler into the flange and then insert the copper pipe

The coupler didn’t fit as tightly into the flange as we wanted. But I have a clever hubby 😀 He put some electrical tape around the coupler until it went in as snug as a bug. Screw the flange into the wood about 30mm from the bottom and attach the brass elbow.

Attach the flange to the pallet wood

You can see some of the electrical tape sticking out of the candle holder on the right. The last step is to add some gorgeous ceramic tiles.
