Last week we shared a tutorial on how to make macramé arrows and that got me thinking about other ways to use arrows in our boho décor style. Something that’s unique, easy to make or customize, and that uses things we normally throw away. Like this LOVE arrow sign. It ticks all of those boxes and more.
The sign is another fun gift idea, that can be displayed all year long. It fits all kinds of décor styles; from farmhouse to minimalist to crazy bohos like me. And the best thing about it….. the LOVE arrow sign doesn’t even take 30 minutes to make, plus you get to play around with wire word art too. And you know how much we love using wire art in our décor 🙂
As a bonus, I’ve also included two Valentine’s themed printables you can download for free a little further down in the post. Just in case, you need a few more pretty things for that gallery wall of yours 😉
What you need
- 1 x dowel stick 1 cm x 20 cm (3/8” x 8”)
- Jewelry wire – 12 gauge (you can read more about gauges here)
- Hand Saw and Drill
- 2 Feathers (Cruelty-free if possible)
- 2 Screws
- Burlap Twine
- Empty soda can
- Wood plank or something to hang the LOVE Arrow on
- E6000 Glue
- “LOVE” template (free to download here)
How to make the LOVE Arrow Sign
Print the free template, and cut a piece of jewelry wire, about 20cm long (about 8”). Use the template as a guide to form the letter of the word “LOVE”. You can read more about wire art and how to bend the wire here.
For the sharp bends, like the top left of the “O” and top left of the “V”, it helps to use needle-nose pliers to squish the wire together.
Once you’re happy with your “LOVE” letter art, cut the dowel stick into two pieces as follows:
- 1 x 8 cm (3 1/8”)
- 1 x 11 cm (4 3/8”)
Place your handsaw on its side and move the shorter dowel stick along the saw to make a small groove in one end.
Drill a small hole in one end of each of the dowel sticks. Put a tiny drop of glue inside the holes and insert the wire “LOVE” letters.
The “E” should face the groove you made earlier and the “L” will point towards the back of the arrow. Glue two feathers on the back of the longer dowel stick. Wherever possible, I buy cruelty-free feathers. It’s good karma and the poor birds don’t end up walking around naked or even worse, losing their lives for my crafting pleasure. If you don’t want to use feathers, you can always make some macramé ones instead.
Making the arrowhead
Cut the empty soda can open with a pair of scissors. Soda cans are surprisingly soft and easy to cut, just mind the sharp cut edges.
Cut two rectangles roughly 6 cm x 7 cm ( 2.5” x 3”) and glue them together so the shiny side is on the outside. Cut a triangle shape to make the arrowhead.
Add a small drop of glue inside the groove you made earlier and insert the arrowhead. Wrap some twine around the feathers and the arrowhead to add a little contrast and visual interest.
Finishing the LOVE arrow sign off
I had this vision in my head of suspending the arrow on a rustic piece of wood, and the best way to achieve that was to screw two screws into the wood and then glue the LOVE arrow sign on top.
We stained the wood using our Rusty Nail Muti to give it that gorgeous aged effect. The LOVE arrow sign has been hung with two framed Valentine’s printables that you can download free here.
I’m so happy with how the sign looks hanging on our wall. It’s such a simple craft idea that makes a really lovely statement. And it hardly costs a thing.
You can replace the word “LOVE” with “HOPE” or “PEACE” or any other word that means something special to you. I’ll be making two more for my kids using their names. My daughter is going through a yellow phase at the moment, so I think I’ll dip her feathers in gold paint and maybe use gold jewelry wire so it fits with her decor. I can always paint the arrowhead too 😉
What do you think? Is it something you would make for your home? Or as a gift for a new homeowner?
