How to Make Vampire Wings – Fun Halloween Craft

Oooooo have I got a fun craft project for you guys today. A few weeks ago I found an adorable little skeleton. He’s a bit bigger than the ones we normally find in the shops here in South Africa, and he looked like such a friendly chap. We named him Sergeant Skullie. Coz a skeleton this awesome can’t be nameless ;-) He was also the perfect size to dress up and add some vampire wings for this month’s IBC’s Halloween challenge.

Aren’t they cool and they don’t even take 10 minutes to do. But before I show you how to make those vampire wings, let me quickly tell you a little about the IBC (Int’l Bloggers Club). Every month a group of bloggers, from around the world, come together to create something using a common theme. Our previous challenge was terracotta and we made these tree-hugging, terracotta planters. You’ll be able to see what my friends did with their Halloween challenge at the end of the post.

RightyO, let’s get to that tutorial. Oh wait, do me a favor and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. And don’t forget to subscribe to our monthly newsletter so you’ll never miss a post!

What you need to make the vampire wings

For this super easy craft you’ll need:

  • Poseable Skeleton or other Halloween prop
  • Faux spider’s web – black
  • Fishing line
  • 14 gauge Jewelry wire – black

We use a lot of jewelry wire in our craft projects, and I’m always looking for ways to use up the leftover pieces. Depending on the size of your skeleton you only need about 1 meter (about a yard).

How to make the vampire wings

Cut two pieces of the jewelry wire the same length as your skeleton.

Bend the wire about 1/3 of the way from the edges as shown below to form a basic frame for your vampire wings. The straight pieces will go on Sergeant Skullie’s back, so measure and adjust accordingly.

Join the two vampire wing frames together by wrapping a piece of jewelry wire around the straight edges of the frame.

Tie the wings onto the back of Sergeant Skullie (or your prop that needs some vampire wings) with some fishing line.

Drape the faux spider’s web over the wing frame and you’re done :D

Easy right??!!

Doesn’t he have the friendliest little face? Not scary at all.

Now he can just chill and wait for Halloween to come around. You can make the wings as big or small as you like. If you want to make life-sized versions, just use thicker wire and glue the spider’s web down.

If you like the idea of making easy vampire wings don’t forget to pin it for later.

Are you making something for Halloween? I would love to hear about it.

You're so right, our Sergeant Skullie will be sticking around for a good long time. He's way to cuter to put in a dark cupboard ?

Michelle, OMG! I totally LOVE this idea!! I have a skeleton in my Dining Room and I wish I had the room to do this with it but I simply can not fit it in the space where I have it if it had wings.... Thanks so much for your kind comment and I will pass it on to Renae and the girls that you are thinking of them... Hugs, Deb

? So glad you like the idea Debbie, even if it won't fit on your skeleton. Maybe next year, if he gets moved to another spot?

Sergeant Skullie looks like a fun ole fellow, not creepy at all. Those wings are sooo cool! I was just eyeballing some skeletons the other day.

Oh my this is just so creepy Michelle. It says put me on a swing by the front door and then you can keep all the candy lol.

I really like the idea of a swing Leanna, maybe I'll make him one ?

As if skeletons aren't scary enough Michelle, now you've got them flying around. Haha! Love how simple yet effective he is.

Thanks so much, Mary and he's a friendly little guy so he's not gonna cause any problems while he flies around ?

Oh my gosh! I love Sergeant Skullie! And I love his bat wings. I can't wait to try this on my skelton too. You are always so creative and come up with some of the best crafts out there!

Isn't he just so sweet ? Hope you enjoy playing around with your Skullie Carolann

Love it, so creative. Your staging is perfect too. I ordered a skeleton from china to do something similar and when it arrived like everything else it was tiny. About 5cm tall. Pinned
acraftymix September 24, 2019 - 4:48 am
Oh, I hate it when that happens. We have a China Mall down the road from us and their prices are incredible, but the quality isn't always the best. That's why I was so happy to find this little guy. He's a keeper

Well he's completely ready for Halloween!! And I love his little lantern!
acraftymix September 24, 2019 - 4:47 am
Yup, Sargeant Skullie is ready for action ?
Marie September 23, 2019 - 4:42 pm
Sargeant Skullie looks to be having a good chuckle over his vampire wings! Too cute and love how easy they are to make. Loving all things miniature, does that adorable mini lantern beside Skullie work? And did you make it or where can I get me one of those?
acraftymix September 23, 2019 - 7:31 pm
Sargeant Skullie rocks ? and yes the little lantern next to Skullie does work but I have no idea where we bought it. Sargeant Skullie is about 36 cm tall (14") so the lantern isn't teeny tiny, just on the small side ?
Katrin September 23, 2019 - 4:21 pm
Aw he looks like such a fun guy to hang around with, haha. Love his vampire wings Michelle! Also he's just a little spooky, in a fun and cute way!!
acraftymix September 23, 2019 - 7:28 pm
He does right??!! When I bought him, I put him on my shoulder and got so many sweet comments and a few raised eyebrows walking out of the Mall. I think that's where we formed a bond ?
