A few weeks back we played with the Instax SP3 and I may have mentioned that we printed a whole bunch of our favorite pics. Now I already have a crapload busload of frames but we did need a unique and fun way to display all those pics. And since we’re DIYers, the easiest thing to do was to make ourselves this yardstick photo display with things we already had lying around the house.
The inspiration for the photo display happened while I was making an “About Us” video for the blog. I loved the way the last bit of the video showcases some of the things we’ve made and shared over the years here on A Crafty Mix. You can make your yardstick photo display as long and wide as you want to. I added “LOVE” blocks at the bottom, but “FRIENDS” or “FAMILY” will work too.
What you need
For this quick and easy DIY, you’ll need:
- A wooden yardstick
- 1 x 1 piece of wood
- String or twine
- Small wooden pegs
- E6000 glue
- Handsaw
- Printer and mod podge (optional)
How to make the yardstick photo display
Measure and cut the 1 x 1 into equal blocks using your handsaw.
The number of blocks you need to cut will depend on the word you choose to add to the bottom of your yardstick photo display. Cut one block for each letter. Lightly sand them to get rid of any rough edges. Use the number of letters to figure out how to space them on the yardstick and cut it shorter if need be. We cut ours in half and then cut a piece of the 1 x 1 the same length as shown below.
Print your letters and mod podge them onto the blocks. I used a font called “Love Box” and you can download it for free here. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can write on them with a Sharpie or permanent marker instead.
Drill a small hole all the way through the letters from the top of the blocks.
Thread the string or twine through the hole and make a knot at the bottom of the blocks to secure.
It makes it easier to get the string through the holes if you wrap some sticky tape around the edge first. Glue the yardstick to the longer piece of 1 x 1 you cut earlier and mark where to drill the holes. We spaced ours every 3″, but you may need to adjust the measurement if you used more letters.
Drill the holes all the way through from the top to the bottom and tie the letters to the yardstick. Just make sure that the letters are hanging in a straightish line. Add your photos with a small peg and you’re all done ;-)
Easy, right?
Don’t you just love the piccy of EeeeeDeeeee Riley Pipsquick (III) in her sunglasses? And Zia with her crazy mouth monster. She’s such a clown. We clearly have a thing for our fur babies.
Our non-fur kids and my gorgeous hubby are there too.
What do you think of the idea? Is it something you would make to display all your photos?
If you like the idea of making a yardstick photo display, why not save the pin for later?
