What could be more fun than making a little Momster that’s totally huggable, easy to sew with endless possibilities for you to create your own unique lovable version.

Aren’t they just perfect for keeping those nightmares and monsters away.

In this beginner-friendly sewing tutorial, I’ll show you how to make adorable, cuddly Momsters to keep the monsters at bay. But, before we get there, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram. And don’t forget to subscribe so you’ll never miss a post!

What You Need

  • 60 x 60 cm (23.5″ x 23.5″) medium-weight woven cotton or fleece or any other material that’s soft an cuddly for the body
  • 30 x 20 cm (11.8″ x 7.8″) contrasting material for the arms
  • Black wool and embroidery needle
  • Black Felt
  • Buttons
  • Scraps of material
  • Stuffing
  • Sewing machine
  • Momster pattern

How To Make a Momster

Print out the free pattern. You may want to increase the size depending on how big you want your huggable Momster to be.

Place the body pattern piece on the cuddly fabric and cut it out using pinking shears. Do the same for the arms, heart, pocket, and eye. To make the basic Momster form you need to cut 2 arm pieces and 2 body pieces. Depending on how you want to customize your little Momster cut an eye, heart, and/or pocket. Fold the arm pieces in half lengthwise, RIGHT SIDE facing inwards, and sew as shown in the picture below.

Turn the arm inside out and stuff, just a bit. Not too much, they should be floppy so they can give better hugs. Leave a little space at the top, it will make it much easier to sew onto the body later.

Adding details

Now for the fun bit. On the RIGHT SIDE of the body start laying out your pocket, heart, eye, and buttons till you’re happy with the look. Get the kids to help you. Pin the pieces in place and either hand sew on the bits or use your sewing machine. To make the mouth use some black wool and make sure to give your Momster a big, fat smile.

Don’t you just want to eat her up? Okay, let’s finish her off. Lay one of the body pieces flat, RIGHT SIDE up and put the arms one on either side of the body. Then put the other body piece on top RIGHT SIDE down and pin the arms in place.

Sew around the body 1 cm (1/2″) from the edge and leave a gap just big enough for your hand to fit through at the top. Be careful of the pins and take it slowly when you get to the arms, they’ll be a bit fat and chunky!!

Take your pins out and then turn it RIGHT SIDES out. Stuff firmly.

Sew up the gap in her head using a needle and thread and add some wool for hair if you’d like.

You can change the pattern any way you want to. Try making the arms and body longer, shorter, fatter, or thinner.

If you making a Momster for tiny little ones, please don’t use buttons for eyes. They’re a choking hazard. These Momster are there to protect and cuddle little and big people ;-)

How would you customize your huggable Momster?

If you like the idea don’t forget to pin it for later.

Sharing is caring;-) Now give that Momster of yours a cuddle and go and make some more.

Oh My Goodness!!! I love these! 6 grandkids so far, all will get one this year for Christmas. Also, I would love to make them to donate to Foster kids along with blankets. May even try to make a few to sell. My oldest Grand girl, 9, is wanting to learn to sew, this might also be a perfect project for her! So many possibilities. Thank you so very much!
