Make Your Own Heavenly Angel Wings Wall Decor

OMW, the year is almost halfway done. How did that happen? This month just flew past. Talking about flying, I’ve been seeing these gorgeous angel wings everywhere lately and I really wanted a pair for our bedroom. Pottery Barn had some oversized ones that are absolutely gorgeous. But the price tag was a little steep for our budget. A whopping $675 is crazy. That’s more than we pay on our bond every month. Plus, even if I could afford them, Pottery Barn doesn’t ship to South Africa. Bah! Humbug! Or as we say in Afrikaans; “Dis somer kak daai”. So if I can’t buy me some angel wings then I’ll just have to make my own.

Pretty cool right?!! And they’re budget-friendly and super easy to make too.

What you need

All you need is a pair of those el cheapo costume wings from a toy store. Any color will do. We had these black ones in our “dress up” storage bin. I’m guessing one of the kids wanted to be a dark angel at some stage.

You’ll also need spray paint in a color of your choice and a frame to mount the wings. We made one using scrap wood.

Making Heavenly Angel Wings Wall Decor

Cut any elastic bits off ….

And spray paint the wings. Because our angel wings were black, I gave them a coat of grey followed by a coat of white to make them look like they’d been cast in stone. A dark brown with hints of copper and gold would look awesome too. Mmmmm, maybe I need to make another one to keep the sexy angel in our metallic bathroom company.

The spray paint serves two purposes – not only does it change the color but the paint protects the wings and makes the feathers quite stiff and hard. That way they’ll be easier to dust once they’re up.

Framing to The Angel Wings

For the frame, I wanted to create a layered look, with lots of texture and visual interest. The easiest way to do that is to make a box frame.  The one we made for the angel wings consists of a basic frame made from pallets. We stapled wire mesh to the back before adding the box portion.

For the last layer or backing, we used a piece of plywood that’s been grungy-field with a few napkins, gauze, and homemade texture paste.

Before putting the whole frame together the angel wings were sewn onto the wire mesh using fishing line.

A clay heart, encased in some chicken wire adds a little something special to the angel wings and it hides that fishing line too. The clay heart was attached using bits of wire.

I love the way the real feathers look against the grungy background.

It’s bold and striking and oh-so-gorgeous. You would never say they used to be toy shop wings. What do you think?

If you want to make your own angel wings don’t forget to pin it for later.

Sharing is caring.

What a fun craft!! It would look great set up on a wrap around porch, in between some rocking chairs! Looks fairly easy to execute too!

I like the way you "grungified" the frame Michelle! In fact, I'd like to know how you did it with napkins and gesso...sounds like an interesting process. Love the gray look on the wings too...gives it an ethereal, aged appearance. Another "Michelle Masterpiece"!
acraftymix June 28, 2018 - 6:22 am
Thank you Florence ? I'll see if I can put together a tutorial on how to grungify something

I really love this! It’s beautiful, Michelle. These are way better then some overpriced crap. Confession: I’ve never been to a Pottery Barn, even though there are two in my area. ??‍♀️
acraftymix June 27, 2018 - 5:37 am
Oh you lucky thing Sam, but I would probably be too scared to go inside. Not sure my frugal heart would make it ?
Mary June 27, 2018 - 1:30 am
Michelle that is such a beautiful upcycle of those old toy wings. Paint certainly went a long way here and turned them into high-end pieces like the ones we see at the pricey stores. You keep working your magic girl. I know there is an angel looking over your shoulder and sending inspiration your way.
acraftymix June 27, 2018 - 5:40 am
? Aww Mary, thank you for that and I'm convinced there is an angel there somewhere looking over all of our shoulders

This is amazing. I would never have thought to spray paint the wings to of course change the color and to hold the feathers together. Great job and look at all the money you saved.
acraftymix June 25, 2018 - 2:23 pm
Yay, for saving all that money and I'm so glad it worked out.
