Now for something a little quirky, or should I say quacky 8-) Coming down the stairs in our little round house, can be tricky if you’re over 5’11. The ceiling is quite low, and you’ll need to duck to avoid bumping your head. We needed a “Duck” sign to warn all our tall friends, but the ones you can buy are a little too boring. So we made our own wacky sign.
This must be one of the easiest signs I’ve ever made. I don’t think I spent more than 30 minutes putting it together, and it makes people laugh out loud when they see it.

What you need
For this sign, all you need is one of those rubber chickens that go “boop, boop” and a pallet offcut. Those chickens drive our dogs mad. I don’t think they like the sound. But, hey, if it saves someone from bumping their head and puts a smile on their face, I’m all for it.
You’ll also need the following:
- Transfer spray if your handwriting is as bad as mine;
- Fishing line;
- And a Sharpie or paint
How to Make a “Duck” Sign
Cut and sand the pallet off cut and then stain or paint it. I did a mock-up of the text on the laptop using a big, bold font. To transfer the letters to the wood, I used GHiANT’s Transfer Spray. I love this stuff; it’s like carbon paper on steroids – just spray it on the back of your image, wait for it to dry (about 5 minutes) and trace. It doesn’t smudge, it’s super easy to use, and a little goes a long way.
Make sure to leave a big enough space between the word “Duck” and all those exclamation marks, so the chicken duck has enough room to hang.
Use a Sharpie or black paint to color in between the lines and lightly sand the letters to make them look worn. To attach the duck, drill two small holes on either side of his neck and use fishing line to hang him up. Shame our fur babies were going nuts, coz that duck was going “boop, boop” while I was hanging him up :D
And that’s it. So quick and easy.
