We’ve been looking for some doormats to use in our holiday cottage but they were all kinda boring. They didn’t have that boho vibe we’re going for and the rubber one we’d bought before didn’t really do a good job of keeping the beach sand out. The other problem was the width of the double patio door. We could find small doormats but we needed something a little wider on the patio. Long story short, we decided to make our own AstroTurf doormat to keep the dirt out :D
The fake grass or AstroTurf has a thick, non-slip backing that helps keep the mat in place and the grassy texture is perfect for trapping beach sand. I’m thinking it should also be pretty weather-resistant too. Hey, it’s fake grass ;-) I can also cut the AstroTurf to any size. So we made this small one for our front door and I plan on making one that’s a little wider for the double patio doors upstairs.

What you Need
Making the AstroTurf doormat was pretty easy and didn’t cost a lot. All you need is:
- a strip of astroturf
- a pair of scissors
- some twine
- sharp skewer
- tapestry needle
You can buy fake grass by the meter at most large fabric shops and AstroTurf suppliers normally have off-cuts that they’ll sell to the public too.
How To Make A AstroTurf Doormat
To make the doormat, cut the AstroTurf to fit the width of the doorway and poke holes at regular intervals all around the outside edge with a skewer or sharp stick.
Cut the twine into 16 cm (6″) strips and thread the strips into each hole in the AstroTurf.
I put three strips into each hole, but you can add as many as you want to.
Knot the strips together to form a fringe.
Repeat, again, and again :D It’s a bit boring and tedious, so you probably want to grab a glass of wine or a beer while you do it.
The smaller doormat took about an hour and a half to make, including getting the beers from the fridge once or twice, so that’s not too bad and Lulu Bell seems to like the finished product.
Now I don’t need to haul out the vacuum cleaner every time we come back from the beach. Yay!!
I think I’ll buy myself a crochet needle and one of those punch things for the longer doormat else I might end up drinking way too much beer.
If you like the AstroTurf doormat idea don’t forget to pin for later.
Have you ever made your own doormat? How did you do it?
