How To Make a Brick & Cardboard Fairy House

Why buy a teeny, tiny little fairy house, when you can make your own? Besides being a lot cheaper it’s so much fun finding things in the garden that you could use. We made this little one this morning using a cardboard beer box and a brick.

Seriously, who doesn’t have those things lying around somewhere?

Besides the brick and the cardboard box, you’ll also need:

  • Sisal Liner (the ones you normally use in hanging baskets)
  • Twigs or small branches
  • Aluminum tape
  • Beads or embellishments
  • E6000 glue

How to Turn a Brick Into a Fairy House

This is a fun and easy project and you can make one or two brick fairy homes in a morning depending on what your bricks look like ;-) Lucky for me, the brick I used already had chunks missing on the sides so all I had to was chisel little bits away to make it a bit steeper. To make a roof, I used a cardboard box. If you separate the cardboard layers, you’re left with this corrugated look.

After you’ve peeled back the top layer, use a nail brush to get rid of any odd bits that are still stuck. Covering the peeled cardboard with the aluminum tape instantly converts it to sheets of corrugated steel and adds a protective layer too. If you don’t have any aluminum tape you can use silver spray paint and a coat of exterior varnish to get the same kind of look.

To get a rusty look, mix some Burnt Umber and Ivory Black oil paint with turps and lightly brush onto the aluminum covered strips.

All that’s left to do is tape the strips together to form a roof.

Glue the roof down onto the brick and add a little chimney made from wood.

Adding Pretty Details

I stuck a big round embellishment on the front of the brick. It kinda looks like a window. For the door, a cardboard cutout covered in aluminum tape with pretty doodles works really well. You can also make a door using popsicle sticks.

The little porch over the door is just a bit of sisal, which has been glued onto the brick and two twigs to keep it up.

It’s that easy ;-)

I love to hear your thoughts. Do you make your own fairy garden things or do you prefer to buy them?

And if you like the idea of turning a brick into a fairy house, don’t forget to pin it for later.

I love fairy houses and yours is so pretty!! The door and the window are spectacular!! The idea of protecting the roof with foil is genius, we made one but attached leaves as a roof... we found later that winter it wasn't water proof

Aaaaw Pili that happens, but some fairies move around a lot - they're like little nomads sometimes. As long as the little ones enjoyed making the fairy house then that's what counts and now you can make another one ;-)

I love how it's a brick - nice and sturdy too! And you're right to buy this would cost quite a bit.

I'm also glad it's a brick. At least the dogs can't destroy eat this one ;-)

Michelle I just love faeries. Your simple project is perfect. I think the faeries would approve of you making it from recycled materials too.

Michelle, this is truly spectacular. And it looks so much better than anything store bought. Love the round window on the top and how you made the corrugated roof. Now we just need a fairy or two on the outside.
