Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? We do. Hubby is half Irish and any excuse to have a beer works for us. When we were younger, St Paddy’s day was all about pub crawls and eating lots of weird green things. Those days are long gone but we can still celebrate this Irish holiday by making a leprechaun bottle topper for our favorite green beer.

What you need
All you need is a piece of green felt, stockings, black fabric, a soda pop thingy, tin foil, orange furry fabric, and a glue gun.
Leprechaun Bottle Toppers; The How-To
The leprechaun bottle topper took about 5 minutes to put together. Figuring out how to cut the hat took me about an hour, though, grrrrrrrr. I just couldn’t seem to get my head around how to make it. I’m blaming it on the fact that I hadn’t had my second cup of coffee yet. Just in case you’re in between cups too, here’s the pattern. If you prefer a more traditional top hat for your mischievous green creature, this little leprechaun tutorial will show you how to make one.
Cut the green felt and then roll it up like a cone, making sure that the back edge lines up nicely before gluing it down.
Take some tin foil (aluminum foil) and scrunch it up into a cone form before stuffing it inside the hat.
The tinfoil acts as a stopper, and you can bend it to give the hat more character. We did the same thing when we made this awesome leprechaun shoe planter. It’s such a simple trick. It even works when you’re making a fairy toadstool.
For the nose, cut a piece of stocking, add some stuffing or cotton wool and use a hair elastic to tie it off.
If you don’t have an elastic band, a piece of string will work too.
To make the hatband and buckle, bend the soda pop thingy in half and thread a strip of black fabric through the thingy. Is it called a soda pop tab?
Putting the leprechaun bottle topper together
Use a glue gun to attach the nose to the inside of the hat; push the extra bits of stocking up inside the hat. Glue the furry orange beard to the inside of the hat, starting at the back of the hat and working your way around. Finally, glue on the hatband.
Bend the hat into whatever topsy, turvy, wonky shape you like and plonk the bottle topper onto your favorite green beer :D
Take some photos of said green beer with the leprechaun bottle topper among the Cymbilaria muralis or ivy-leafed toadflax. Don’t you think it looks just like a four-leaf clover? Well, kinda.
Open that green beer to cheers St. Patrick and all the amazing things he did for Ireland way back in 400-something AD. Oh, I almost forgot; talk about the luck of the Irish. While I was making the leprechaun bottle topper, hubby found this little wire clover thing on the floor.
I have absolutely no idea where it came from. None whatsoever, but it fits. Talk about serendipity. It’s pretty easy to make too. Just bend some jewelry wire into a clover shape.
