Do you like building fairy gardens? You do :-) then I’ve got something really cute and easy for you today. To celebrate the arrival of Spring, I thought I’d make our garden fairies this little fairy hammock so they could relax and enjoy the gorgeous weather we’re having. I wanted to share how we did it so your fairies could have one too.
All you need is some fabric, a skewer or toothpick, string, an embroidery needle, scissors, pliers, and some wire.

How to make a fairy hammock
Start by cutting a 12 cm x 9 cm (4 7/8” x 3 1/2”) strip of fabric. This will form the seat of the hammock. I unraveled the fabric just a little giving it a pretty edge. Fold the fabric in half, lengthwise, and measure 1.5 cm (1/2″) from the edge.
Use the mark to cut the fabric, as shown below. You should end up with a fabric strip that’s 12 cm long by 9 cm wide on one side and 6 cm wide on the other side.
Cut the string into two 31 cm pieces (about 12”). Starting at the top and using small stitches, sew the string into the fabric on either side. Leave about 8 cm of the string at the top. You’ll need it later to hang the fairy hammock.
Make a knot in the string at the top, and then gather the string until the fabric forms a nice cupped shape just big enough for the fairies to sit comfortably.
Tie a knot at the bottom once you’re happy.
Cut the skewer or toothpick so that it’s about 8 cm long (3″). Tie the two top bits of string to the skewer, making sure that they’re equal. Tie the string together at the top with a small loop knot.
Then tie the bottom strings in the same way. Once again, you need to check that they’re equal; otherwise, you’ll end up with a lopsided fairy hammock.
Check that the hammock hangs nicely. You may need to move the string around a bit until it looks right. Once you are happy, use a glue gun and glue the knots to the skewer to make sure the knots stay put. Cut away any excess bits of string. You can hang the hammock in a tree or make a small wire stand. For the stand, I bent a piece of wire into a curly, wurly shape and made a hook.
The little cushion is just a piece of fabric that I stuffed with tissue paper. Hey, nothing is too much trouble for our fairies.

All that’s left to do is sit back in your own life-sized hammock and wait for the fairies to come for a visit.
