One of the things I always have in my craft stash is moss. I love using the stuff in our projects. Anything from giving a mannequin a mossy corset to making outdoor pillows and creating weird and wacky creatures for our porch, moss is my go-to material. For Easter, I wanted to add a small moss bunny to our décor, but the ones in the shop were just blegh. So, like most times, I decided to just make my own adorable newspaper moss bunny.

And I’m so glad I did because, besides the moss, all it cost me was two hours of my time and a tube of glue.

Her ears bend and she looks so good nestled up against an off-cut from our Spekboom kokedama and the yakisugi shutter frame we made a few months back.

What you need

  • Newspaper

  • Craft moss
  • Coconut fibre

  • Green craft paint (optional)

To make the adorable moss bunny you'll need newspaper, moss, glue, masking tape and skewers

How to make a newspaper moss bunny

This Easter craft couldn’t be easier or more budget-friendly. Start by scrunching the newspaper into a large firm ball. About the size of an Ostrich egg.

Scrunch up some newspaper to form a ball

Make a second smaller oval-shaped ball in the same way.

Roll the newspaper into two balls. One large and one medium

Wrap the newspaper balls in masking tape. The masking tape helps keep the balls in shape and acts as a protective layer for the next step.

Wrap the balls of newspaper with masking tape

The two balls will form the head and body of the moss bunny. To make the ears cut two 25 cm (10”) pieces of wire. Bend them in half and twist the ends together as shown in the piccy below.

Twist the wire into elongated oval shapes

Make a hole on either side of the small newspaper ball and test-fit the ears to see if they’re the right size.

Make a small hole with the skewer and test fit the ears

Tear strips of newspaper and wrap them around the wire bunny ears.

Wrap strips of newspaper around the wire ears

I wrapped about 4 layers of strips per ear, so they were nice and bulky. Place the bunny ears on a piece of masking tape to create some kind of support for the back and trim to size.

Stick some masking tape on the back of the ears

Paint all the newspaper bunny pieces green. I used all of my fav green paint when I made our faux metallic cupboard and the only paint I could find that would work was a blue green color. Painting the newspaper balls is optional but it does help disguise any mossy gaps.

Paint the balls and ears with green craft paint

Paint the insides of the ears brown and glue coconut fiber inside the bunny ears.

Glue moss to the outside of the ears and coconut fiber to the inside

Glue moss around the ear “rims” and on the back of the ears.

Use a pair of scissors to trim away the excess moss and neaten the ears up.

Glue moss all over the two newspaper balls. Keep the area around the ear holes open.

Glue the moss all over the bunny pieces

Insert the ears and glue on a little more moss to hide any gaps.

Putting the moss bunny together

Time to put this baby together 😀 Stick a skewer into the bunny’s head (that just sounds sooooooo wrong). Figure out where it needs to go and insert the other end of the skewer into the body.

Insert a skewer into the body ball and add the bunny head

Give your moss bunny a tail by scrunching up a small ball of newspaper and gluing on some moss.

Make a small newspaper ball for the bunny tail

You can attach the tail to the bunny with a toothpick or glue it on.

If it feels like your bunny wants to topple over because she’s top head heavy, you can add two small feet by rolling up some newspaper and covering them with moss. The feet can also be attached with a toothpick or glued on.

Just for fun, I added a small concrete heart around my moss bunny’s neck. To make the heart use our 2-ingredient mold recipe to make a heart-shaped mold and pour the concrete inside. While the concrete is still wet, insert a skewer. Once the concrete dries, remove the skewer and insert some twine.

In my humble opinion, the bendable bunny ears give this little one so much character.

And if the moss ever dries out or goes all brown and yucky, I’ll use our secret moss revival trick to restore her.
