Make a Custom Doormat to Keep the Dirt Out

We’ve been looking for some doormats to use in our holiday cottage but they were all kinda the boring and the rubber one we’d bought before didn’t really do a good job of keeping the beach sand out. The other problem was the width of the double patio door. We could find small doormats but we needed something a little wider on the patio. Long story short, we decided to make our own doormat using some astro turf aka fake grass.

The fake grass has a thick, non-slip backing that helps keep the mat in place and the grassy texture is perfect for trapping beach sand. I’m thinking it should also be pretty weather-resistant too. Hey, it’s fake grass, lol!! I can also cut the grass to any size. So we made this small one for our front door and I plan on making one that’s a little longer for the double patio doors upstairs.

Looking for a great way to add some pizzaz to your front door. Make your own custom doormat using astro turf and keep the dirt at bay

Fake grass custom doormat

Making the doormat was pretty easy and didn’t cost a lot. All you need is a strip of astro turf about 40 cm wide (about 16″) and a ball of twine.

What you need to make an stro turf custom doormat

Astro turf and twine

To make the doormat, cut the astro turf to fit the width of the doorway and poke holes at regular intervals all around the outside edge with a skewer or sharp stick. Cut the twine into 16 cm (6″) strips and thread the strips into each hole in the astro turf. I put three strips into each hole, but you can add as many as you want to.

Make holes and thread through

Knot the strips together to form a fringe and repeat, again, and again. It’s a bit boring and tedious, so you probably want to grab a glass of wine or a beer while you do it.

The smaller doormat took about an hour and a half to make, including getting the beers from the fridge once or twice, so that’s not too bad and Lulu seems to like the finished product.

Now I don’t need to haul out the vacuum cleaner every time we come back from the beach. Yay!! And I think I’m going to buy myself a crochet needle for the longer doormat else I might end up drinking way to much beer 8) Have you ever made your own doormat? How did you do it?

What a brilliant idea! I have sliding doors that lead out to our backyard that also need an extra wide mat. And I love how well the astro turf and twine fringe work together :)

Michelle, your doormat looks awesome!! What a great idea!! Lulu seems to like it too. Yay for not having to vacuum the beach out of your house. I crocheted a jute rug once but it turned out better in my mind than in real life, lol.
